EVER SINCE ITS ESTABLISHMENT, SCULLYS HAS BEEN ADHERING TO THE IDEA OF OBTAINING THE MOST NATURAL AND PURE INGREDIENTS FROM NATURE, WHICH ARE NOT ONLY USED IN BEAUTY AND SKIN CARE PRODUCTS, BUT ALSO IN OUR HOME COLLECTION PRODUCTS.

In all our Scullys products we only use ingredients which are safe, sustainable and not tested on animals. We strive to only use packaging materials which are either recycled or fully recyclable.

We prioritise the use of glass and aluminium tins, as these are two materials that can be infinitely recycled and durable to be reused. Over the past few years, we have been redesigning our products replacing non-recyclable plastics with cardboard, paper, numbers 1/2/5 recyclable plastics, and also introducing more sustainable product ranges.

Palm Oil Production

Can palm oil production be as sustainable as other oils?

Looking at the environmental and biodiversity effects of palm oil compared to other oil-rich crops such as rapeseed, soybean, cotton and sunflower, we realise that we are relatively well-informed about the impact of palm oil production, while we know very little about that of the other crops. As a result, in order to have better informed discussions on the comparative sustainability, and relative merits, of all plant-based oils we need to have better insight into the effects of their production.

Oil Palm

It is crucial that we are aware of the negative impact on humans and the environment of the different oil-producing crops.

The oil palm yields much more oil than other crops, as much as two to eight times more per hectare than rapeseed, soybean, peanut, coconuts or sunflowers.

Oil palm, with harvest cycles of about 25 years, is grown in areas with many plant and animal species, many of which are endangered, but with some living in oil palm trees. The oil yields are large. Oil production by annual crops such as soy and rapeseed requires much more land and harbours few other species.

As long as the demand for plant-based oils in our food, animal feed, bio-diesel and other products continues to rise, we will be seeking options to step up production.

Replacing the EXISTING PALM OIL PRODUCTION with other oil crops would mean using up to eight times more land to satisfy an equal demand for edible oils. Furthermore, entire communities of villagers for decades have been relying solely on the oil palm fruits harvested in existing plantations for their economic security and survival.

The only way forward on the path to sustainable palm oil production, is for Companies to follow through on their commitments to sustainable practices with strong implementation plans and adequate investment in implementation.

Palm oil producers should invest more heavily in improving sustainable production practices on the ground and develop robust and credible traceability systems to track palm oil to the plantation level in order to verify that their products meet their sustainability commitments and that ARE NOT the result of irresponsible deforestation.

While companies that use palm oil to manufacture their products should develop strong monitoring systems to verify compliance with their sustainability commitments, too. At the same time, they need to collaborate with, engage, and invest in their suppliers to help them meet their sustainability commitments.

The transition to sustainable palm oil production is a shared responsibility and requires collaboration by all stakeholders. Companies, civil society, and governments need to work together to both incentivise the transition to more sustainable palm oil – through both market and regulatory mechanisms – and act with greater urgency to develop and implement solutions to move the sector forward.

Scullys commitment

Can I trust RSPO certified products?

The RSPO is the global standard for the sustainable production of palm oil. When palm oil is produced in adherence to RSPO standards, growers help to protect the environment and the local communities who depend on the crop for their livelihoods, so that palm oil can continue to play a key role in food security, economic development, and food supply chains. We should continue to use RSPO certified sustainable palm oil in products, as replacing it would result in more deforestation and natural habitat conversion. RSPO certified products that use palm oil from ‘Segregated’ or ‘Identity Preserved’ supply chains offer the greatest assurance of sustainable palm oil.
